My largest painting yet. We continue to explore the Panamanian jungle. Through this "Monte" series, I am thoroughly enjoying the unique Panamanian biodiversity which allows me to appreciate and render many different types of leaves and branches, and animals, of course. The vast variety of forms, colors, and textures in nature is something that is complicated for the human mind to comprehend, let alone attempt to conjure with only imagination, which is why I don't. Observing and expressing is more who I am as an artist. This is why I work from references. I call my style "pop impressionism" because my brushwork absolutely is inspired by the early impressionists, but the color pallets are constantly changing, as I am changing. (see most recent dog portrait)
For as long as I can remember, I have enjoyed staying still for extended periods of time, creating all kinds of things. Opposite my yearning to stay calm and comfortable, I have been lucky to be continuously exposed to biology from an early age, and able to safely explore nature with my hands and with my simple SRL camera, and now also my phone.
This painting was made from a photograph I took recently on an island near Portobelo in Colón, Panamá. The lizard moved as I was taking the shot, so I got it in the two positions seen. See the original photo, and some process photos of the painting by scrolling all the way to the bottom.
